SCCS October Teachers of the Month

SCCS October Teachers of the Month

Congratulations to our October Stark County Catholic Schools Teachers of the Month who were recognized by the Canton Repository!

Central Catholic: Joanne Zahler, Art
Joanne Zahler has been teaching art at Central Catholic for decades. She brings out the inner artist of every student, from the student taking an elective to the student who is creating a portfolio, bound for art school. Year after year, her students win prestigious art shows, she helps senior leaders create beautiful banners to represent their class so that they are represented in the halls of Central Catholic for years to come, she leads a student Art Club, and helped students create a living Rosary representing multiple countries installed at the school’s outdoor Grotto. She has been instrumental in encouraging each student to find their talents and in creating much of the beautiful pieces found on campus.

St. Thomas Aquinas High School: Rachel Boggs, High School Science
Rachel Boggs teaches science at St. Thomas Aquinas, she has become an important part of the school’s distinguished science department, where students post some of the highest test scores in the county and out-rank state and national averages. Mrs. Boggs is a knowledgeable educator who offers students a depth of knowledge, and she continually finds different ways to engage students in the material to maximize their learning. She also takes the time to get to know students personally and can often be found in conversation with students or attending Aquinas athletic events to cheer on the Knights. While Mrs. Boggs has only been at Aquinas a few years, it seems as if she’s been part of the Knight family for decades.

St. Thomas Aquinas Middle School: Chelsea Lenox, Middle School Math, and Science
Chelsea Lenox has been teaching at St. Thomas Aquinas Middle School since Aquinas opened their doors to grades 6-8 in 2014, teaching math and social studies. Her leadership has been instrumental in creating an effective learning environment for middle school students. Perhaps more important is that students and faculty alike feel welcomed by Mrs. Lenox, who can always find a positive word for everyone she meets and who makes her students feel as if STA is a home away from home, all while maintaining excellent class management. No matter what is happening around her, especially in recent years as we faced a pandemic, she has never steered away from her calling to teach and give 110% to her students.

SS. Philip and James Catholic School: Laura Bonnot, third grade
Laura Bonnot has been teaching at SS. Philip and James Catholic School for 14 years and is the lead teacher. She has high standards for her third-grade students, including using technology, online platforms, and websites daily for homework and assignments. She has a record of a 100% pass rate for the Third Grade Guarantee Test! Mrs. Bonnot has a strong faith that she shares with her students, as she models and expects respect, kindness, and manners for the school and students. She stresses math facts, cursive writing, and reading to know – not know how to read. Four words that describe Laura Bonnot: fair, organized, dedicated, reliable!

Congratulations to our other Stark County Catholic Schools Teacher of the Month Nominee for October!

St. Mary Catholic School: Ann Weakland, 5th Grade
Ann Weakland, of St. Mary Catholic School, is the fifth-grade homeroom teacher and teaches 5-8 ELA. She is in her fifth year at St. Mary's and has 14 years of experience in the DOY. Mrs. Weakland is a teacher who makes an impact on students. Students feel comfortable expressing their opinions while actively listening to others. She creates a sense of community and belonging in her classroom and welcomes each student for their individuality. While helping students become life-long learners, she is one herself. She takes graduate courses to stay current and is always willing to share her knowledge.
