St. Paul seventh-graders work hard, learn in park visit

The seventh-graders of St. Paul Catholic School in North Canton have a long standing partnership with the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

For more than 15 years, they travel to the Cuyahoga Valley Environmental Education Camp for hands-on, multi-day learning experiences.

This year, from April 2-5, 32 students attended the camp in Peninsula for advanced science and environmental concepts. They hiked trails, learned about the ecosystems in the park, went pond-dipping and collected macro and micro invertebrates at the Cuyahoga River Furnace Park.

In addition, the students took part in a large service learning project. Natalie Murphy, junior high science teacher at St. Paul, stated, “One of our best lessons was our service learning lesson on Friday (April 5). We were the first school to work in the park, reforesting an old farm field. Students planted 100 trees in the park. For years to come, students and their families can come to the park to visit the forest they planted.”
