Stark County Catholic Schools’ Teachers of the Year

Recently, several Stark County Catholic Schools teachers were awarded All-County teaching honors. Awards for All-County Teacher(s) of the Year and Rookie(s) of the Year were presented at the annual Stark Educational Service Center’s awards dinner at R.G. Drage Career Technical Center on April 29. All nominations were selected by a panel of judges that included representatives from The Canton Repository, AultCare and Carrabba’s Italian Grill. Teachers of the Year were selected because of their dedication to educating and inspiring their students in unique and innovative ways.

Three teachers from Stark County Catholic Schools were honored at the ceremony.  Linda Miller, second-grade teacher at St. Mary Catholic School in Massillon, was named an All-County Teacher of the Year along with Gerald Hudnall, English teacher at Central Catholic High School in Canton. Miller is a graduate of both St. Mary School and Central Catholic (Class of ’77). Central Catholic’s Lauren Sharnsky, social studies teacher, was named an All-County Rookie of the Year. According to the Stark Educational Service Center, “Rookie Educators honored have less than three years teaching experience, display a passion for his or her students, and use innovation in the classroom.”

In addition to Stark County Catholic Schools’ teachers being recognized as Teachers and Rookies of the Year, many of its alumni were among the recipients. St. Mary Catholic School and Central Catholic (Class of ’12), alum Emily Keane, a teacher at Sandy Valley Local, was named an All-County Rookie of the Year. Conner Busby, a Northwest Local teacher and St. Michael School and Central Catholic (Class of ’10) alum, was also recognized as an All-County Rookie of the Year. Four of Stark County’s current superintendents are alumni of Stark County Catholic High Schools. Steve Milano, Canton Local Superintendent, is a St. Thomas Aquinas High School Class of ’75 grad; Mike Shreffler, Superintendent for Northwest Local Schools, is a Central Catholic Class of ’86 grad; David Fischer, Sandy Valley Local Superintendent, is a Central Catholic Class of ’87 grad; and Kevin Finefrock, Osnaburg Local Superintendent, is a Central Catholic Class of ’95 grad.
