Virtual Awards Assembly: Recognizing the Class of 2020

Our Virtual Awards Assembly recognizes all of the accomplishments of the Class of 2020. Given the unique circumstances surrounding COVID-19, we are unable to have our full assembly but we still wanted to offer a final awards assembly for this year's senior class. Here are some of the awards you'll hear announced: valedictorian, salutatorians, Tower of Light Award, John McVay Athletic Award, Eagle of the Cross Award, a list of seniors who received gold honor cords, an Academic Honors Diploma, and the President's Education Award, among other awards.

RECOGNIZING THE SENIOR CLASS

Department Awards 
The English Department would like to recognize the following seniors who have maintained a semester average of “A” in English for four years. This award is named in honor of Mr. John Wagner, who in his 44 years as an English teacher, established a standard of excellence in the English Department.

The Science Department proudly recognizes members of the senior class that have demonstrated outstanding achievement in the field of science.  Named in honor of Mr. Lowell Klinefelter, who in his 48 years as a Chemistry teacher, established a legacy of excellence that will endure as the standard by which all Crusaders are measured.  To qualify for this award, a student must have accumulated a minimum of 5 credits in science and have maintained a minimum grade point average of 4.4 in these classes.

President's Education Award
Thirty-seven (37) students have qualified for our next award.  This year President Trump is sponsoring the President’s Education Award for Educational Excellence.  These awards are made to the graduating seniors who have maintained a 3.5 or better average for 7 semesters and have received a score placing them at or above the 85th percentile on a nationally recognized standardized college admissions exam.

National Honor Society 
The National Honor Society is a nationally affiliated program established by the National Association of Secondary School Principals in 1921. The purpose of this organization was to:
  •             Create enthusiasm for scholarship
  •             Stimulate a desire to render service
  •             Promote leadership
  •             Develop character in the students of secondary school

Graduates who are members of the Central Catholic chapter are distinguished by the blue cords they were with their caps and gowns.

Eagle of the Cross 
The Eagle of the Cross Award is given yearly by the Diocese of Youngstown. This national honor is given to outstanding Catholic teenagers who exemplify moral integrity, prayer, good works, and Christian leadership. Each Catholic high school has two recipients of the award and each deanery of parishes has a recipient as well. We would like to honor all of our recipients and nominees from this year’s Eagle of the Cross Ceremony:

John McVay Athletic Award 
The John McVay Award was established to honor the outstanding athlete in the graduating class. This award is given to the senior who has been voted by all the coaches and administrators to be the best all-round senior athlete. This year, the John McVay Award is presented to AUSTIN BECK.   
 
Tower of Light 
The Tower of Light Award was initiated 27 years ago and is given annually to a graduating senior who has exemplified the qualities of leadership, Christian witness, involvement,  dedication to Central Catholic, and service to others throughout their years at Central Catholic.
