Spring Spotlight: St. Thomas Aquinas baseball’s Alex Hawkins

Hawkins, an All-Ohio quarterback in the fall, batted a team-best .397 last year for the Aquinas baseball team.

Throughout the spring, the Canton Repository will highlight local high school athletes who have had their seasons canceled because of the coronavirus outbreak. Today’s featured athlete is St. Thomas Aquinas baseball senior Alex Hawkins.

Hawkins batted a team-high .397 last year for the Knights. He was a First Team All-Ohio quarterback for the Aquinas football team in the fall when he threw for 2,487 yards, a school-record 28 TDs and only four interceptions.

What are your thoughts on spring sports being canceled?
I am very disappointed because I could not play my last season as a Knight.
 
What were your goals for this season?
To become the school’s career leader in base hits and stolen bases, earn All-Ohio and win a state championship.

How have you adapted to remote learning?
I like having the flexibility to do my school work whenever I want.

What do you miss most from your day-to-day routine, sports aside?
I miss seeing my friends everyday and talking with my teachers.

What do you miss most about your sport?
I miss being around my teammates and coaches and I miss competing each day.

What have you been doing to stay in shape?
I work out with my brothers each day.

What are you doing to find inspiration or motivation through this?
I try to maintain a positive attitude by focusing on my schoolwork and preparing for college.

How have you been staying in touch with teammates and friends?
We talk almost everyday in our team group chat, along with having team Zoom meetings.

Best binge-worthy TV show?
Criminal Minds.

Are there lessons you’ve learned from this?
I realized that tomorrow isn’t guaranteed and that you have to make the most of every situation.

With some time to reflect on what is happening, have you re-evaluated how you wish to spend your time when you’re able to resume your day-to-day activities?
I am looking forward to spending time with my friends and family.

What are your post-high school plans?
To attend Kent State University and major in Sports Management.
